South Africa -
Sterkfontein Dam (Free State - inland)

GPS Coords :  28°24'37.37"S  29°1'59.59"E
Wind : NW-W 25-50 knots. Best wind between May and September.
Temperature : Shorty wetsuit can be worn in Summer, but full 4-5mm suit must be worn June-August, plus hoodie and gloves. Water can be 6 degrees C in Winter, and up to 20 in Summer.

Description :
The dam has crystal clear water that's drinkable and is at the edge of the escarpment which has a local effect that accelerates the wind.
Peak speeds in excess of 50 knots have been recorded here more than a dozen times, but the run is only 200m long resulting in lower averages. A 46 knot 10 second average is good going here.
The wind has a 4km fetch in which to steady before hitting the headland that creates a sheltered bay we do speed in.

South Africa -
Velddrift River (Western Cape)

GPS Coords :  32°47'41.99"S  18°10'42.37"E
Wind : S 25-30 knots (Summer) or NW 30-40 knots (Winter). Strongest wind in Winter, but then it doesn't blow as often and can be very gusty.
Temperature : Shorty wetsuit can be worn most of the time; a full length wetsuit is recommended in Winter though. The river is much warmer than the cold Atlantic ocean nearby.

Description :
Finding a launch spot can be tricky as most of the area is restricted and space is limited (salt pans).
The South wind tends to be very gusty in Summer as it passes over land before reaching the river. The NW in Winter packs more of a punch but does not blow as often.

South Africa -
Richards Bay (KZN)

GPS Coords :  28°48'15.49"S  32°2'37.76"E
Wind : N-NE 20-30 knots (Summer). It gets wind almost year round, but seldom strong enough for speed.
Temperature : Shorty wetsuit can be worn the entire year. The air and water temperature are lovely and warm.

Description :
This is a restricted spot and permission must be obtained from the port authorities before attempting to sail here, as it's in the middle of a busy harbour.
You'll need to charter a boat to get to the sand bank and the bank is only exposed at low tide.
The reward for your trouble is plate glass water conditions and a nice long run (400-500m).

Port Saint Louis, Luderitz, Walvis Bay and several other spots will be covered soon . . .
