GPS Sessions and Rankings

The handheld GPS has resulted in the rebirth of speed sailing as you can now do speed anywhere anytime, set yourself speed targets, or compare your speeds to those of friends and pro's alike.

Getting Started

  1. Buy or borrow a GPS. The best GPS for speed sailing is the Locosys GT-31. I have limited stock of these available as I need them to run the Sterkies Speed Event. The agent for them is Rob Munro from Naish Africa.
  2. Configure the GPS properly before use. Refer to the manual I've written to help you do this.
  3. You'll need a waterproof pouch for the GPS. I recommend the Aquapac pouch.
  4. You can learn a lot by doing post session analysis, the best software for this is GPS Results. It's simple to operate and has all the salient information readily available. It comes with a 30-day trial period, and costs 29 Euro should you want to use it beyond this.
  5. Read the speed kiting tips I've written.
  6. Buying or borrowing a speed board is the next logical step, as they definitely help improve your speeds. The reason is that they have less wetted area due to a narrower tail, this reduces drag and gives you greater control at speed.
  7. You can register your speed sessions right here and qualify for a prize. Prizes will be awarded to those leading the rankings, and you could win a lucky draw prize just by registering your session. You can also register your session on the international site.

GPS Session Rules

  1. All speeds submitted must be in knots and be Doppler based. This is the default when using GPS Results and GT-11 and GT-31 handheld GPS units. Ask for help if you're not sure. Non-doppler GPS devices may not be used, as the skew the readings too much due to the grid-effect.
  2. I reserve the right to remove or alter your session should your track file not be available on request to verify your session.
  3. Prizes will be awarded bi-annually, and the contest period will run from 1 January until 30 June, and 1 July until 31 December each year. Simply by registering a session, you'll be eligible for a lucky draw prize. Depending on the sponsorship available we might offer a most improved rider prize too.
  4. My sessions (Basil Cambanis) will be excluded from the ranking for prize purposes, as I want it to be up for grabs amongst the newbies to speed.
  5. Sessions recorded at World renowned speed spots such as Luderitz and Walvis Bay will be excluded for prize purposes, as it represents an unfair advantage to the rest of the sailors. This strictly for local spots such as the Vaal, Sterkies, Shark Bay, Velddrift, Swartkops, Witsand, Knysna lagoon, Richards Bay harbor, and the like.
  6. This is open to all sailors, including windsurfers and kiters.

Prize Sponsors

Ocean2AirKitesports and Surfers Ballito have kindly agreed to sponsor the prizes.
Prizes will be sponsored on a rotation basis between them.
I'll announce shortly who's the first season's sponsors and what prizes are up for grabs.

So get out there and start registering some sessions !
